It’s been a wild ride folks, but after 44 years living and working in Durango, and three and a half years working for Gateway Reservations, my family and I are off to explore other horizons. As my soon-to-be former boss Bruce Moss says, “Living the Dream.” Tomorrow is my last day here at Gateway, and it is a bitter sweet moment for me. Not only will I miss the great people I work with, but all of the fantastic activities that I will not have at my door step. The Durango & Silverton Railroad, riding through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Soaring Tree Top Adventures, I never thought I would be soaring through the Ponderosa Pines at speeds up to 35 miles per hour. Rafting down the Animas River in high rapids or just taking a lazy float trip on a hot late summer day. Jeeping at 12, 000 feet above Silverton, high above the tree line and being able to see as far as the eye can see. I will really miss taking a drive by myself up to Mesa Verde National Park and rediscovering the amazing cliff dwellings while the wild mustangs run in the distance. Or snow shoeing on all the area trails while the snow lightly falls and then warming back up at Trimble Hot Springs. Durango will always be my first home and I know I can come back and visit anytime my family and I feel the need. If you would like to experience any of these activities I experienced since childhood, then I encourage you to contact Gateway Reservations, right now! Don’t hesitate! Durango and the surrounding areas are just as wonderful as I have described, if not more! Not Goodbye, Just so long for now. Cheers!

I love all the events at the fair, however I mostly love the food! Where else can you get away with eating curly fries smothered in cheese sauce and green chili with a side of half a turkey leg? Lets not forget all the animals! The beautiful, and can I say “well groomed” cows, the just washed look of the rabbits and roosters, the soft and fuzzy new born lambs. I am always in awe of the 4H exhibits; the prize winning vegetables, and the arts & crafts. These kids are amazing to say the least. The fair starts TODAY, August 7th and runs through Sunday,August 11th. There is still time to get here to Durango, stay the weekend and experience the best events! Call Gateway Reservations for last minute lodging options and have one of our agents help you with some fun discounted packages as well.
Looking for another great way to cool off and enjoy the beautiful mountains in the Durango area? Last weekend we gave relatives from the desert of Phoenix a great adventure in the cool San Juan Mountains. We started in Durango and took the fabulous Million Dollar Highway north to Silverton, an interesting old mining town. We then took part of the Alpine Loop that takes you over Engineer Mt Pass (at 12,700 feet you truly feel as though you are on top of the world!) and down into the tiny mountain town of Ouray. Along with the incrediable views, we enjoyed the beautiful wild flowers, wildlife and passing through the remains of many old mining sites. Don’t have your own 4X4 vehicle? – Not a problem! There are plenty of jeep tours to choice from in the area. Make your visit to our area even more memorable with a stay at the lovely historic General Palmer Hotel in Durango – one of my favorite places to stay in town. Also enjoy a night in Silverton at another great historic hotel, the Grand Imperial. When you’re ready for an adventure please call one of our knowledgeable agents at Gateway Reservations and we’ll be happy to help!

Doesn’t this look refreshing? There is nothing like ending a hot summer day with a exhilarating raft trip on our famous and beautiful Animas River. My daughter and I hooked up with Durango Rivertrippers yesterday and had the best time ever. Our guide was very professional, knowledgeable, and funny. The family we rode with were visiting from Oklahoma and had not been to the mountains before, let alone on a river rafting trip. After learning I am a life-long local and work for Gateway Reservations, they had all kinds of questions on other activities they could enjoy while visiting our beautiful area. By the time I was done I think I had them talked into 4-wheeling to our ghost towns, going to a show at the Henry Strater Theatre Melodrama, and having a relaxing evening at Fox Fire Farms. If you would like to experience all of these activities and more, why not give us a call? We can set you up with a Southwestern trip of a life time. Discounted lodging, activities, and great LOCAL customer service! See you on the river!
