For the summer season of 2011, the historic Henry Strater Theatre hosts the famous Durango Melodrama and Vaudeville! With over 48 years in existence, the Melodrama will kick off with 2 shows this season - "The Pursuit of Happiness" and "After Dark." The shows will typically alternate each night so there is always something fun for the whole family.

The Pursuit of Happiness -

This is a tale set during the American Revolution, of a charming Hessian soldier who wants to surrender to Americans. After all, he loves the idea of this new country where it is written in the constitution that they are dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal and who also wants to spend their time "running after happiness". What could be better? Perhaps the innkeeper's daughter? You'll love this fun and patriotic play with just the right amount of the inevitable complications of the period.

After Dark -

Set in 19th century London, "After Dark" is the customary convoluted combination of mistaken identities, lost inheritances and skullduggery that characterizes classic melodrama. Watch the spectacular and highly anticipated arrival of the speeding train as it races toward its witless victim. There is a hero, a beautiful heroine and of course a conniving villain and villainess. What will happen and how will it all end?

There is only one way to find out. Come in and enjoy one of Durango's longest running entertainment traditions!.

The History of The "Hank"

A theatre this old has history as equally entertaining as the shows that continue to appear season after season. In 1961, next to the Strater Hotel was a dusty old car garage that was screaming for a transformation. The vision was of burgundy and rose and the idea was to entertain locals and tourist for years to come. The unique and attractive theatre opened its doors on June 23rd, 1962 with rave reviews earning national acclaims for the Four Corners area. TIME Magazine raved that the theatre was one of the top theatres during its premier summer season.

The Henry Strater Theatre’s debut show was the off-Broadway and Las Vegas hit "Forever Plaid." The show sold out opening night and continued to bring in sold out crowds to cheer on the fun and enthusiastic performers. In 2009, The Hank also brought in the Broadway classic "Dames at Sea," which enjoyed a summer of sold-out, family friendly entertainment. The theatre plans to continue to bring in different varieties of world renowned shows including comedy, bands, musicals, drama, magic and mystery, cabaret, and more!

Again this year, the Hank is brining the classic Durango Melodrama and Vaudeville show home! They will also continue to offer the popular and delectable Dinner Theatre package! Enjoy a world-class meal from the Mahogany Grille and an evening of fun and entertainment, all at one great low price. For the Dinner Theatre menu, simply click below:
