Telluride, Colorado

Telluride is a breathtaking, majestic and awe-inspiring town that is the essence of Colorado mountain beauty. The historic town of Telluride is surrounded by San Juan Mountain peaks on all sides and centered around the idyllic Bridal Veil falls and sitting at the foot of the ski mountain and still represents the character of a 19th century mining town. While the town is only 13 blocks long and five blocks wide, it is a mecca for outdoor adventurures as well as relaxed mountain charm while enjoying 14,000 foot peaks and beautiful clear blue skies.

Telluride Lifestyle and Recreational Activities:
There is both the historic town of Telluride ase well as the Mountain Village, the more refined community located at the resort. While the 19th century mining downtown is a bit more rugged, both sides of Telluride are united by an authentic local feel. Telluride's most distinctive quality is its beauty followed by its lack of pretension, representing a comfortable and casual understated affluence. The gondola connects the ski resort with the historic town and besides being quite convenient, it's a spectacular ride.

In addition, Telluride Ski Resort offers a genuine mountain experience for all levels thanks to a mix of quality terrain at all points on the mountain. From refined groomed runs to challenging bumps, there truly is something for everyone. Even beginners and intermediate skiers can ride to the highest peaks and enjoy terrain and views typically reserved for the experts.

Whether you are looking for a slope-side luxury condominium or a clean, affordable room in town, Gateway Reservations has many options for you to choose from. Check out our packages or call a Travel Specialist today at 800-409-7295.

Telluride Colorado History:
Gold was first discovered in 1858 and John Fallon made the first claim in Marshal Basin above Telluride in 1875 and early settlement of Telluride followed. The town was founded in 1878 and, after 9 years as "Columbia", the town was renamed after "tellurium," an element associated with deposits of gold and silver, which was never actually found. Mining remained Telluride's only industry until 1972, when the first ski lift was installed. As mining phased out and a new service industry phased in, the local population changed sharply and mining families fled in hopes of continued employment. This shift in the 60's brought in the "hippies" that were attracted by a casual life style and outdoor adventures. The 70's brought massive change for Telluride as the Ski Resort was founded and the towns famed festivals sprouted up, exposing hundreds of thousands to the majestic beauty of the valley for the first time. By the 90's, Telluride had established itself as a premier resort town with a rich western history and booming modern culture - making it a favorite destination for families from around the globe of all shapes and sizes.
