“Living in Durango for almost 30 years, I have traveled the roads in and out of Durango hundreds of times.  Touring this beautiful area from the air was awe-inspiring and provided a totally different perspective.  We took off from the La Plata Airport and headed towards Navajo Lake. I was amazed at the number of oil and gas wells and the dirt service roads that dotted the land.

Pilot Tom then flew over the Navajo Dam and followed the lake to the northernmost point which gave me a true understanding of how big Navajo Lake truly is.  From there, we headed towards Vallecito Lake and Lemon Reservoir.  It was interesting seeing the burn scar from the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire and how much new growth has happened since then.

We continued north following the Missionary Ridge and flew over Baker’s Bridge (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’s famous jump scene in the 1969 movie), Electra Lake, and Haviland Lake. We didn’t quite make it all the way to Purgatory Resort, due to the pilot’s 25-mile radius flight restriction.

Prior to heading back to the airport, I appreciated seeing our newest reservoir just west of town, Lake Nighthorse. Not only does this reservoir provide water storage for tribal and water rights claim-holders, but it also provides a nearby, beautiful spot to enjoy motorized and non-motorized water recreation.

This air tour was a great way to take in the beautiful landscape we live in. The fastest hour I have ever spent.  Wonderful!  I highly recommend it.” – Bruce Moss, Owner, Gateway Reservations

“Durango Air Tours is a unique way to experience the Durango area. From the knowledgeable and experienced pilot to the amazing aerial views – this adventure is a new way to see Durango as you’ve never seen before. We did the all-inclusive one-hour Discovery Flight, which includes everything from mountain views, lakes, dams, to overlooking the city of Durango. This amazing activity makes it easy to see as much of Durango as you can from a bird’s-eye view.

We felt extremely safe with our pilot, Tom Jensen, who has over 20 years of experience flying. He was very informative and went into depth about all the various landmarks we were seeing. Some of the main highlights of the Discover Tour were the 14,000-foot peaks of the Rocky Mountains, pristine lakes, and desert mesas. The only downside to this excursion is that it went by too fast!” – Brittany Rivera, Local Travel Consultant, Gateway Reservations
