Thanksgiving Getaway to Durango?
Maybe, sitting around the house all day eating and watching football is not really what you had in mind for Thanksgiving this year? Maybe, you’re looking for a way to celebrate how grateful you are for your family and friends in a unique way? Maybe, you are thinking of a last minute getaway? Do Turkey Day your way! How about a getaway to Durango for Thanksgiving? Durango is known for its incredible scenery and awesome year-round weather. Typically, you’ll have snow in the high county but drier conditions in town.
Durango has a diverse set of opportunities and experiences: outdoor adventures, arts, culture, Southwest history, and a fantastic town to explore with amazing restaurants, shops, and galleries. You can explore Mesa Verde National Park while there are no crowds, the temperatures are cool, and the entrance fee is lower (only $15 per vehicle). The scenery around Durango is spectacular, and although you don’t have to go off the highway to see it, many off-road trails are still open for 4×4 vehicles, hiking and biking.
There are tons of options and trails to choose from where you can hike or bike (even rent electronic bikes) to get the fresh air, scenery, and exercise you need before your big Thanksgiving meal. Check out ROLL e-Bikes if you want to test these out on our Animas River Trail.
One thing you probably shouldn’t pass up on in Durango, if you are coming in November and December, is a ride on the historic Durango Train. Over Thanksgiving week, you can choose from the scenic, daytime Cascade Winter Train Ride, which is about a 6-hr. excursion in to high country (good chance to see snow), or the nighttime Polar Express Train ride, which is about 70 mins. long and is a fun, festive holiday ride for all ages. No trip to Durango over the holidays would be complete without one or both of these train rides.
One of the many wonderful things about Durango is that you don’t have to break the bank to get here; Durango is a scenic, relaxing “drive-in” destination. From these nearby hubs, we’re just a quick and lovely jaunt away:
Phoenix 8 hrs.
Albuquerque 3.5 hrs.
Colorado Springs 5 hrs.
Grand Junction 3.25 hours
Santa Fe, NM 4 hours
Amarillo, TX 7.5 hrs.
Pssst: you can always check road conditions at COtrip.org or check out Durango’s weather. (You won’t believe how mild the temperatures are here, but please remember nights and mornings are quite chilly – so bring layers and be prepared for changing mountain weather).
Remember, we live here, work here, and play here! So, give us a call if we can you put together a Turkey Day Getaway to Durango for you. We’re always happy to help. And, regardless of how you decide to do Turkey Day, we hope you find the best way to be grateful this Thanksgiving.
