The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train: fall and winter highlights

Though summer is drawing to a close, themed rides on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are ramping up. In many ways, fall and winter are our favorite seasons for train rides, and here’s why: THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride has to be our number one reason, and we’ll tell you why in a minute, but first, hurry and book! We know it feels early, but this train sells out so fast.

So, here’s why we (and apparently many, many others) love THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride:

This isn’t just a train for kids-it brings out the kid in everyone. Last winter, we took my grown children and their partners, and we had a blast. One of the girls here at the office took her niece and nephew, and they had a blast. This is truly a train ride that everyone will enjoy. Billy, Santa, the elves and all the other characters from the award-winning book, The Polar Express, join you on the train fora  magical retelling of the enchanting original. The setting is dreamy: soft lighting, a rocking train, music, stories and hot chocolate. Children and adults alike are invited to wear their pajamas and participate in the story telling. This will definitely be a winter holiday tradition in our family for years to come, and we highly encourage you to make it a tradition in yours. Call now to learn more about our POLAR EXPRESS™ packageWe’ll answer any questions you have, reserve your tickets, and book accommodations a short walk away from the train in charming and historic downtown Durango.

We love how this train includes the hunt and the harvest alongside all things Halloween. Dress your kiddos in their Halloween duds and ride the train out to the valley for a bounce house, face painting and trick-or-treating. And, you’ll get to harvest your perfect pumpkin and take it home in time for Halloween.

Dates: October 8 & 9, 15 & 16, 22 & 23

Traditional Train Tour

It’s impossible not to include this classic train ride on our list, especially this time of year.

Toward the end of September and into the beginning of October, the aspen leaves turn into golden and crimson coins that paint the mountain sides, snow caps the peaks of the San Juan Mountains, and the crisp air makes hot cocoa and hot toddies sound better than ever. So, layer-up and enjoy the spectacular scenery on the ride from Durango to Silverton during this prime time of year.

Final date for the 2016 season is October 29.

Want to ride it one way and stay over in the historic mining town of Silverton? We can make it happen.

Want to keep with the historic, Old West theme and stay in downtown Durango? We’ve got you there, too.
