Too Much Snow? 3 Fun Winter Activities for Southwest Colorado

Is there such a thing as too much snow? In our little corner of Colorado, it’s not usually the case. However, with the past few week of snowstorms  – or Snowmaggedon as it has been referred to around here – several feet of snow can make winter feel like it’s dragging on and all you can do is ski  (which, really, when is that ever a bad thing, eh?).  Luckily for you, at Gateway Reservations, we have several ideas for what you can do to take advantage of all of this lovely fluffy white stuff.

  • Go Snowmobiling – With endless views from up high, going snowmobiling is a great way for the whole family to see snow-covered mountain tops and have a blast doing it. Operating into early April, Ice Pirates Snowmobiling takes you to Molas Pass, a mere 16 miles north of Purgatory Ski Resort, into the San Juan National Forest. Their tours are unique and fun, led by guides who put safety first. This is a trip you won’t want to miss!

  • Ride the Train to Cascade Canyon – Have you ever ridden a train in the winter? It is one of the most magical experiences, and it’s right here in Durango! Hop on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and ride 46 miles roundtrip into the heart of the San Juan National Forest- in the winter! Great fun for the whole family, the Cascade Canyon Winter Train is a can’t miss when the snow starts to fall and the waterfalls ice over. You can read more about it here.

  • Hop into some Hot Springs – Ah, yes. A chill in the air, grey skies on the horizon…but it doesn’t matter. Why? Because you’re soaking and relaxing in an outdoor hot spring pool. Let the snow fly because the most relaxing thing to do is to watch the snowfall from outdoor hot springs. From Pagosa Springs to Trimble Hot Springs, Ouray Hot Springs, and Glenwood Springs, Colorado isn’t short of geothermally-heated waters. With the health benefits of hot springs working in your favor, take a day and relax.
