Rex2 This Ski Season, Stay Slope-Side

By | Activities, Adventure Packages, Adventures, Durango Mountain Resort, Durango Snow Conditions, Family Packages, Purgatory, Skiing, Snow Conditions, Vacation Planning | No Comments
As ski season fast approaches, we have families calling to plan their winter vacation and we're reminded of the perks of booking ski-in, ski -out accommodations.     Three reasons we prefer to stay slope-side: The flexible schedule: Do you have an uncle who wants to be on the first chair and a cousin who can’t wake up before noon? No worries. Everyone can rendezvous when the time is right, but there’s no tension caused by schedule preferences when you can all hit the slopes at your own pace. And, some can ski out in the morning not return…

Fall always brings flora to mind: trees that glow yellow, red, and orange are a classic portrait of the season. But changing leaves aren’t the only thing that color this region with an impressive pallet: an abundance of historic and cultural sites color the region with fascinating peeks into the past. Perhaps the most famous of these cultural sites, one of our favorites, is Mesa Verde National Park. And, while the ancient ruins tucked into high-desert alcoves are stunning year-round, fall offers prime temperatures and added color. There are numerous ways to see the Park, and we can…

Fall is beautiful in Durango: the river runs clear, the trees are on fire, the air is crisp and the days sunny and pleasant. With colors beginning to change and peak season just around the bend, we thought we’d share a couple of our favorite ways to get out there and soak up the sights.         OUR TOP FIVE: Hike There are innumerable trails in the Durango area for reveling in the incredible autumn colors. Late September, head to the high country where the aspens are combusting and the air is crisp. In town, the Animas River Trail…

By | durango, Durango Family Packages, Family Packages, packages, Special Events, train, Train Packages, Uncategorized, Unique Packages, Vacation Planning | No Comments
Though summer is drawing to a close, themed rides on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are ramping up. In many ways, fall and winter are our favorite seasons for train rides, and here’s why: THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride has to be our number one reason, and we’ll tell you why in a minute, but first, hurry and book! We know it feels early, but this train sells out so fast.       So, here’s why we (and apparently many, many others) love THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride:  This isn't just a train for kids-it brings out the…

Rex2 The “musts” for your vacation to Ouray, Colorado

By | Adventures, Family Packages, Uncategorized, Vacation Planning | No Comments
While there’s not a lot you can do wrong on a visit to Ouray, there are definitely some things you can do right. We’re here to make sure you know what they are.       1) Stay centrally The town is tiny, it’s true, but at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet, even a short walk can feel like more. So grant yourself the luxury of staying smack dab in the middle of shops, restaurants, cafés, galleries and hikes at the Ouray Chalet Inn. They do a lovely job of pairing family-owned hospitality with first-class accommodation. Oh, and enjoying…

Rex2 Photo Essay: Recent Off-Road Excursion with Durango Adventure Tours

By | Adventures, durango, Durango Family Packages, Family Packages, Uncategorized, Vacation Planning | No Comments
Bruce and I just did the UTV rental (a Polaris RZR®) through Durango Adventure Tours, and we’re pretty excited to tell you about it. We went up Kennebec Pass in the La Plata Mountains (just a short drive from downtown Durango) with our son Jeremy and his fiancée Katy (spoiler alert: we didn’t scare her off!).   And it was such a blast (although sometimes hair-raising)!               At one point, we went over the notch at the pass and both Kaitlyn and I were alternating between laughing and crying.          …

Rex2 A Final Summer Fling (until next year, anyway)

By | Activities, durango, Durango Family Packages, Family Packages, Uncategorized, Vacation Planning | No Comments
In just a few short weeks (give or take), kids return to school, teachers to their posts, and most of us to our hometowns. But, that still leaves time for one last summer getaway, and we’ve got some great ideas to fill in that last blank spot on the calendar. Give the kids something to talk about back at school and make memories that will keep everyone connected, even once you’re back in the normal routine.       Rock climbing is one of our new favorite family-friendly activities. Learn to trust one another and overcome obstacles together with help…

Rex2 Blasting Back: Experience that “Old West” Charm in Durango

By | Activities, durango, Durango Packages, Family Packages, train, Vacation Planning | No Comments
Part of Durango’s allure is how closely connected the town remains to its Western roots. And, while there are bountiful ways to experience the “Old West” in Durango, a couple of our favorites include spending an evening at the Bar D Chuckwagon and watching the Durango Western Show at the historic Henry Strater Theatre. Here’s the break down on blasting back to Durango’s storied past: Bar D Chuckwagon This is the perfect way to fill an afternoon and evening during your Durango stay. The grounds are open all day and the shops open at 5:30pm. There are nature trails, parks,…
