With winter break right around the corner and snow forecasted for our little town, what better way to spend your vacation than riding the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad?

The historic steam engine will take you almost all the way up to Silverton so you can see some of the most amazing scenery covered in snow. The Cascade Winter Train departs daily from the Durango station and gives you a front row seat for 26 miles through some of the most impressive mountainscapes of the San Juan National Forest. Follow the Animas River and see waterfalls covered in ice as you snuggle up in the heated coaches and drink hot cocoa. You’ll also get the opportunity to walk around once the train has stopped so make sure you’re wearing appropriate gear for a winter getaway in the mountains!

Of course, the Cascade Canyon train wouldn’t be complete without a boxed lunch option, as well. They offer several different delicious options (as well as gluten-free!) for those that don’t want to have to worry about packing in your food.

If you’re wanting to dive into the deeper history of the area, make sure to mention that you’re interested in the San Juan Holiday Narration ride. You’ll learn all about Durango, the early settlers and mining history as well as how they used to celebrate the holidays back in the day. This fun, historical train ride takes place December 21 - January 1 and you’ll get the chance to ask your historic guide (who will be all dressed up in period-appropriate attire, too!) what the children on the frontier did for their first Christmas out west! This is a fun experience for the whole family and definitely not one to be missed.

If any of this sounds like a fun-filled, family adventure you’d like to do while you’re visiting Durango, click here to book now or give us a call today at 800-828-4228 and we’ll make sure you have the time of your life this holiday season!
