A favorite saying here in Colorado is, “Wait five minutes and the weather will change.” It’s almost the go-to phrase you’ll hear when it’s snowing or raining or sunny outside in the mountains. Though we’re finally seeing the days get longer, we still have plenty of days where it will snow in the morning and by evening it’s 50 degrees. So, what do you pack for a trip where the weather changes so much?

Layering Tees:

Packing a tee that can layer easily under a sweater or a shirt can help give you that extra bit of warmth, which is especially needed in the evenings. Though the days may be warmer (sometimes into the sixties!), the evenings cool off quickly and who knows? It might snow for a few minutes in the morning, so you’ll want that extra layer to keep you nice and comfy.

Waterproof hiking/walking shoes:

Bringing good walking shoes will help you feel better at the end of the day, but bringing shoes that are waterproof are even better. If you’re going to be walking around downtown Durango (or even wanting to go for a hike in town), packing good walking shoes that are waterproof will help ensure your feet stay warm and comfortable no matter the weather.

Sunscreen and sunglasses:

Since you’re at a higher elevation, you’re closer to the sun and, therefore, your skin has a higher chance of getting sunburned. Yes, even when you’re skiing while it’s snowing, you run the risk of getting sunburned. So make sure you have the proper skin care. Bringing sunglasses ensures that you’re protecting your eyes from the sun and the snow, too. You’d be surprised at how badly you’ll miss them some days!

Waterproof Outer Layer:

Because, well, getting soaked from rain or snow just isn’t fun. Make sure you’re dry, warm, and comfortable by bringing a rain jacket or a waterproof shell of some kind. They’re light and easy to pack down so they don’t take up too much space, but by bringing this outer layer, you’ve just made your vacation to the mountains 110% more comfortable.
